Accessibility

Accessibility is not
a checkbox here.

I live with visible physical realities every day. That makes access practical, personal, and non-negotiable.

My commitment

My life and work are shaped by disability, technology, and the belief that people should not have to fight the room before they can contribute to it. This website, like the talks, should be usable by everyone regardless of how they navigate the web. I am committed to an experience that works with screen readers, keyboard-only navigation, assistive input devices, and a range of vision, hearing, and cognitive needs.

What's been done

This site was built with access considered from the start:

  • Semantic HTML with proper landmarks (header, main, footer, nav, section)
  • Descriptive alt text on meaningful images; decorative images omitted from screen readers
  • Color contrast ratios that meet or exceed WCAG 2.1 AA for body text
  • Keyboard-navigable interactive elements with visible focus states
  • Responsive, resizable layouts that reflow at 200% zoom
  • Plain-language copy — no jargon where a clear word will do
  • No auto-playing audio or video; the decorative marquee is hidden from screen readers and stops for visitors who prefer reduced motion
  • Form fields (booking inquiry) labeled clearly with no reliance on placeholder text alone

What I'm still working on

I am honest about the gaps. Known issues I am actively improving:

  • Third-party embeds (Google Forms, video) may not match the same standards as content I author directly. I surface plain alternatives wherever an embed appears.
  • A future manual motion control is under consideration for visitors who want an on-page pause option.
  • A full WCAG 2.1 AA audit by an external reviewer is planned.

Accessibility at my events

If you are booking me to speak, accessibility at the venue and in production matters as much as anything on this page. I am happy to help coordinate:

  • ASL interpreters and CART (live captioning) for in-person and virtual events
  • Accessible stage access and seating
  • Materials in alternative formats on request (large print, plain text)
  • Sensory-friendly accommodations and advance walk-throughs for attendees who need them

Report an access gap

If something on this site does not work for you, or works worse than it should, tell me directly. Good access improves through clear feedback.

Reach out through the booking form and put "Accessibility" in your message. I aim to respond within two business days. If you need a specific accommodation to engage with me or this site, say so directly and we will work through it.
